The best folding electric bike is the one whose folded size and weight match how you will actually carry and store it, and whose tires, motor and battery match your rides. A light, compact folder suits train commutes and small apartments; a heavier fat-tire folder suits riders who want comfort and grip and mostly fold the bike to fit a car trunk.
We carry nine folding e-bikes, from $759.24 to $3,002.00 at the time of writing (October 2026). This page explains how to choose, then compares the folding e-bikes we carry using their published specs. It is a spec comparison, not a tested ranking.
How to choose a folding e-bike
Folded size
Measure where the bike will live: your trunk, closet or the space under a desk. Compare those numbers with the manufacturer’s folded dimensions, and remember that pedals and handlebars can add width.
Weight
Weight matters more on a folder than on any other e-bike, because you will lift it. Check whether the published weight includes the battery. Many folders let you remove the battery before lifting, which helps.
Wheel size and tires
Most folders use 20-inch wheels. Narrower tires (about 1.75 to 2.4 inches) keep weight and folded width down. Fat tires (3 to 4 inches) add grip and cushioning on rough roads, gravel and sand, but add weight and bulk.
Motor and speed
US-spec bikes like the Himiway B3 use a 500 W hub motor and a throttle. Italwin and Wayel bikes are EU-spec: 250 W motors with pedal assist limited to 25 km/h (15.5 mph). If you want a calmer ride, that lower limit can be a plus; if you want to keep up with fast traffic, it is a limit. See our e-bike speed guide.
Battery and range
Battery capacity in watt-hours (Wh) is the best quick guide to range. Manufacturer range figures are best-case numbers that depend on rider weight, terrain, assist level and temperature.
Step-over height and rider fit
A low step-over makes mounting easier, which matters for older riders and anyone with limited hip or knee mobility. Check the maximum rider weight too: the Italwin K2 MAX, for example, is rated for riders up to 198 lbs.

Best folding electric bike under $1,000: Himiway B3
The Himiway B3 at $759.24 is the only folder we carry under $1,000. Himiway lists a 500 W geared hub motor, a 720 Wh battery with a 70-mile rated range, a torque sensor, a thumb throttle, a 40 mm coil suspension fork, mechanical disc brakes, a 300 lb maximum payload and a recommended rider height of 5’0″ to 6’0″. Its standover height is 18.8 inches. The trade-off is weight: at 60.6 lb it is the heaviest folder here with a published weight. It suits riders who want power and range for the money and will mostly fold it to fit a car or closet.
Lightest folding electric bikes we carry: Italwin K2 S, Flipper 3 and K2XL
If you search for the lightest folding electric bike, weight without battery is the number to compare. Among our folders with published weights, the Italwin K2 S is lightest at 18 kg (39.7 lb) without its battery; Italwin lists its 378 Wh battery at 2 kg. It has front and rear disc brakes, a 30 mm suspension fork, Shimano 7-speed gearing and a rated range of up to 60 km (about 37 miles).
The Italwin Flipper 3 has the most compact published folded size here, 85 x 46 x 70 cm, and weighs 20 kg (44.1 lb) without battery. Italwin’s catalog offers it with a 313 Wh battery (up to about 50 km, 31 miles) or a 461 Wh battery (up to about 75 km, 47 miles); ask us which version is in stock. It uses V-brakes rather than discs.
The Italwin K2XL sits between standard and fat tires with 20 x 3 inch Kenda tires, disc brakes and a lockable 30 mm fork, at 24 kg (52.9 lb) without battery.
All three are EU-spec, with pedal assist to 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Italwin’s catalog lists pedal assist with five levels and a soft-start function, and does not list a throttle.
Fat-tire folding e-bikes: K2 MAX, NEXT+, eBig and Next 20
Fat-tire folders trade portability for comfort and grip. Five of our folders use fat tires; see also our fat tire e-bikes and fat tire buying guide.
- Italwin K2 MAX ($2,622.00): FIVE F90 mid-drive with 90 Nm torque, a 378 Wh battery hidden in the frame, up to about 50 miles of rated range, hydraulic disc brakes, a lockable fork and a folded size of about 38 x 20 x 30 inches. Maximum rider weight is 198 lbs.
- Wayel NEXT+ ($3,002.00): the same F90 mid-drive with a larger removable 614 Wh battery, up to about 56 miles of rated range, hydraulic disc brakes, a lockable fork and a 3.5-inch LCD. It weighs about 57 lb without battery and folds to about 43 x 24 x 33 inches.
- Wayel eBig 48V ($2,622.00): a 696 Wh battery, 4-inch knobby tires, an adjustable suspension fork and a rear motor.
- Wayel eBig 20″ 2nd Gen. ($2,242.00): 20 x 4 inch tires, an adjustable suspension fork, a rear motor and a standard luggage rack.
- Wayel Next 20″ ($2,622.00): a fat-tire folder with a FIVE 48V rear motor and a Shimano 7-speed gearbox.
Mid-drive motors like the F90 use the bike’s gears, which helps on hills. Both listings rate the F90 for slopes up to 30%.
Best folding electric bike for seniors
For older riders, a low step-over, lighter weight and smooth power delivery matter most. By Italwin’s geometry table, the Flipper 3 has the lowest step-over of its folders at 410 mm (about 16.1 inches), compared with 605 mm for the K2 S and 700 mm for the K2XL. The Himiway B3 has an 18.8-inch standover. Italwin’s soft-start function eases pulling away from a stop. Our step-through e-bikes are also worth a look.
How to fold an electric bike
Every model folds a little differently, so follow your owner’s manual. The general sequence is:
- Turn the bike off. Remove the battery if the manual says to, or if you need to lift the bike.
- Lower the seatpost fully.
- Fold the pedals, if they fold.
- Open the frame hinge latch and fold the bike in half, keeping cables clear of the hinge.
- Release the stem latch and fold the handlebars down.
- Secure the halves with the strap or magnet, if provided.
When unfolding, close and lock every latch completely, and check that the frame and stem do not move before you ride.
