An ebike size chart matches your height, and ideally your inseam, to a frame size and wheel size. As a rough guide, riders around 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 7 in usually fit a small frame and riders around 5 ft 10 in to 6 ft 1 in a large one, but sizing varies by brand. Many e-bikes, including most of the ones we carry, come in one frame size with a manufacturer-published rider height range, and that range is the number to check first.
Below you will find how e-bike sizing works, a general height-to-frame table, wheel sizes from 20 inches to 700c, and the published rider height ranges for the e-bikes we sell, with picks for short and tall riders. Prices are ours at the time of writing (October 2026).
How e-bike sizing works
A bike fits when you can stand over it comfortably, reach the bars without stretching, and extend your leg almost fully at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Five measurements decide that:
- Rider height. The starting point for most size charts.
- Inseam. Stand against a wall in socks, pull a hardback book up between your legs, spine up, and measure from the top of the book to the floor. BikeTips calls this cycling inseam the most reliable number for frame size (BikeTips).
- Standover height. The height of the top tube where you straddle the bike. BikeTips suggests about 1 to 2 inches (2 to 5 cm) of clearance on a road bike and around 5 to 10 cm on a mountain bike. A step-through frame makes this much easier, because there is little or no top tube to clear.
- Frame size. Given in inches, centimeters or as S/M/L. Brands measure it differently, so compare charts within the same brand.
- Wheel size. Smaller wheels lower the bike and its standover, which helps shorter riders. Larger wheels roll over bumps more easily and suit taller frames.
BikeTips also notes that e-bikes follow the same sizing principles as regular bikes, but they are heavier, so a good fit matters even more for handling and for putting a foot down at a stop.
Ebike size chart by height
This general chart is BikeRadar’s mountain bike size chart, which uses the same S/M/L labels many e-bike brands use. BikeRadar notes that sizing is not consistent between brands, so treat it as a starting point and check each model’s own chart.
| Rider height | Frame size | Size label |
|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 4 in (152-162 cm) | 13-14 in | Extra-small |
| 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 7 in (162-170 cm) | 14-16 in | Small |
| 5 ft 7 in to 5 ft 10 in (170-178 cm) | 16-18 in | Medium |
| 5 ft 10 in to 6 ft 1 in (178-185 cm) | 18-20 in | Large |
| 6 ft 1 in and up (185 cm plus) | 20-22 in | Extra-large |
If you fall between sizes, there is no universal rule. Riders who want a relaxed, upright position often size up, while racers often size down for a lighter, stiffer frame (BikeTips). A test sit, or a careful look at standover height, settles most cases.
E-bike wheel sizes explained
The inch names are traditional labels, not exact measurements. The reliable number is the ISO bead seat diameter in millimeters, which is what tires and rims are actually matched by. Sizes below are from Sheldon Brown’s tire sizing guide.
| Wheel size | ISO diameter | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 20 in | 406 mm | BMX, folding bikes, kids’ bikes |
| 24 in | 507 mm | Youth mountain bikes, cruisers |
| 26 in | 559 mm | Mountain bikes, cruisers, most fat bikes |
| 27.5 in (650B) | 584 mm | Some mountain bikes |
| 28 in / 700c | 622 mm | Road, city and touring bikes (29er mountain bikes use the same rim size) |

All ranges are Himiway’s published figures. The A7’s two frame sizes are listed exactly as Himiway publishes them.
Ebike for short riders
Shorter riders, roughly 5 ft 3 in and under, usually do best with three things: a step-through frame, smaller wheels, and low standover so both feet reach the ground at a stop.
- Lowest published minimum heights. The Himiway B3 is rated from 5’0″ and uses 20 inch wheels. The Himiway A3 ST and the Regular-frame A7 start at 5’1″.
- Low standover on a fat-tire bike. The Himiway D5 2.0 ST has a 19.3″ standover height and a 5’1″ minimum, compared with 27.6″ on the step-over D5 2.0. It also has a 0-60° adjustable stem. At 92 lbs it is heavy, so consider whether you can manage it when walking it or lifting it.
- 24 inch ebike option. The Italwin Nuvola 4 24″ pairs 24 inch wheels with an aluminum step-through frame with an extra-low down tube and a manually adjustable handlebar, and weighs 44 lb without the battery. Italwin does not publish a rider height range in our product data, so contact us to check the fit.
- Compact folding bikes. The Italwin Flipper 3 has a folding frame with a low down tube on 20 inch wheels.
Browse all step-through e-bikes and 20 inch e-bikes. Our guides to e-bikes for seniors and e-bikes for women cover easy mounting and lighter frames in more depth. Note that most Italwin and Wayel models list a 198 lb maximum rider weight.
Ebike for tall riders
Taller riders need a frame long and high enough for full leg extension without a cramped reach to the bars. Among the e-bikes we carry, the highest published maximum is 6’5″, so if you are taller than that, none of our published ranges cover you.
- Up to 6’5″ with fat tires: the Himiway D5 2.0 (step-over frame, 5’1″ to 6’5″), and the Zebra (D5) and D5 Pro (both 5’3″ to 6’5″).
- Up to 6’5″ with full suspension: the Himiway A7 Pro on 27.5 inch wheels and the Himiway Cobra (D7) on 26 inch fat tires.
- Taller riders who are also heavier: check payload as well as height. Our ebike weight limit guide compares published limits across the models we carry.
When people search for the best ebike for tall riders, the honest answer is the one whose published height range covers you with some margin, not one at the very top of its range. If you sit near the upper limit, a longer seatpost or a riser handlebar can help, but check the minimum insertion mark on the seatpost. The 28 inch Italwin and Wayel city and touring bikes are another 700c ebike option for taller riders, but their makers do not publish a rider height range in our product data, so contact us before ordering.
Fit tips once the bike arrives
- Set saddle height so your leg is almost straight with the pedal at the bottom of the stroke.
- Use the adjustable stem where fitted (the D5 2.0 family and the A7 have a 0-60° stem, the Prestige 2 has a stem you can adjust by hand, and the Nuvola 4 24″ has a manually adjustable handlebar) to bring the bars closer or higher.
- Practice stopping and putting a foot down before your first ride in traffic. Our guide on how to ride an electric bike covers the basics.
We ship within the US for a flat $130 per order and accept returns within 30 days of delivery, so you have time to check the fit at home.
FAQ
What size ebike do I need for my height?
Start with the manufacturer’s published rider height range for the model you like. As a general guide from BikeRadar’s chart, riders 5’4″ to 5’7″ fit a small frame, 5’7″ to 5’10” a medium, and 5’10” to 6’1″ a large, but brands differ.
Is a 24 inch ebike only for kids?
No. 24 inch wheels are common on youth bikes, but adult bikes such as the Italwin Nuvola 4 24″ use them to keep the frame low and easy to step through.
Is 28 inch the same as 700c?
Yes, for practical purposes. Both refer to the 622 mm ISO rim size, according to Sheldon Brown’s tire sizing guide. European brands such as Italwin label it 28 inch.
Is a 26 inch ebike good for short riders?
It can be, if the frame has a low standover. The Himiway A3 ST (26 inch) is rated from 5’1″, and the D5 2.0 ST combines 26 inch fat tires with a 19.3″ standover height.
What is the best ebike for tall riders?
Choose one whose published height range covers you with room to spare. Among our models, the Himiway D5 2.0, Zebra, D5 Pro, A7 Pro and Cobra (D7) list maximums of 6’5″.
Should I measure inseam or height?
Both. Height matches you to a size chart, while inseam tells you whether you can clear the top tube and set the saddle at the right height.
